European Day of Languages

European Day Of languages

The European Day of Languages (2001), organized in collaboration with the Council of Europe and the European Union, has brought together millions of people from 45 countries. Through various activities, linguistic diversity in Europe is celebrated and language learning is promoted.

Following the success of the Year of Languages, the Council of Europe announced that European Language Day will be celebrated on 26 September each year.

Across Europe, 800 million Europeans are represented by the 47 member states of the Council of Europe and are encouraged to learn more and more foreign languages every day, at any age, inside or outside school. This stems from the Council of Europe’s belief that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving a broader intercultural understanding and a key element in our continent’s rich cultural heritage. The Council of Europe in Strasbourg therefore promotes multilingualism throughout Europe.

The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are to:

  1. raise public awareness of the importance of language learning and the diversity of the different languages being learned, in order to increase multilingualism and intercultural understanding,
  2. promote rich linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe in order to preserve and cultivate it,
  3. Encourage lifelong language learning, in and out of school, whether for study, business, mobility or entertainment and exchange.

September 26, 2011 marked the 10th anniversary of the European Day of Languages (European Day) celebrated in the Council of Europe and all 47 member states.
